365 Days a Year: Feb 28

This was a late afternoon capture- I was getting dinner ready and noticed that Oreo was transfixed by something outside. Then I noticed that there was a rather loud something happening outside, so I went out to investigate.

At first, I didn't see anything at all... then I saw the road was covered with a flock of white galahs, all squawking and chirping together. I have no idea if there was seed on the road or if they just decided to descend on this spot for a rest? But, not knowing how long they'd be there, I grabbed a picture while I could and stood transfixed, marvelling at their number. No sooner had I lowered the iPhone than a car drove (slowly) through the crowd, the birds scattered and didn't return. Awesomeness :)

365 Days a Year: Feb 27

It was our weekly shopping day yesterday and while I really enjoy having PK along for the ride with me, we do end up with a few extras in the trolley!

Back when I worked shift work I would do the grocery shopping on my own and it would be a well budgeted, speedily executed operation. Now that I've joined the regular hours club, we do the shopping together and although it takes a little longer and is probably a little more expensive, PK and I have a good time spending a little time in each other's company after a long day. :)

365 Days a Year: Feb 24, 25 & 26

Feb 24
PK and I were lucky enough to head out on the river in a friend's boat on Friday afternoon for a twilight sail. Nothing like the wind in your hair to blow out the cobwebs of the week before! Plus it was nice to have a little down time away from the computer and my task-lists!
Feb 25
I pulled out the Bernina on Saturday to make another attempt at hemming the curtains in the dining space. I thought I had it right and took up a centimeter across the width of one of the panels. Unfortunately either the curtain, the curtain rod or the floor is not square/level! So one end is now perfect while the other appears to need another 5cm or so taken up... The second panel is yet to be hemmed at all- such a bad housewifey!
Feb 26
Another example of being a bad housewifey- I conned PK into going out to dinner last night :) We had an offer to head out with some friends to an outdoor cinema, but after another busy weekend we really just wanted to keep it low key last night. PK made a last minute booking at a local restaurant and then we headed out for a 'date night'. We could easily have done take-away (it was Indian after all), but just getting out of the house made it a little bit spesh. We may have spent half the time talking about wedding plans...

365 Days a Year: Feb 23

I don't know that I've mentioned this on FromMuriel before, but I am a four-eyes! I've worn glasses since '99 when I discovered I could no longer see the whiteboard from the 'cool desk' at the back of the classroom ;)

These are actually an older pair of glasses- I haven't been for an eye check in a little while and that's because I want to get laser eye surgery and not have to wear glasses any more! I'm a little afraid that if I get checked I'll be told my prescription has changed and I'm not suitable for the procedure...

365 Days a Year: Feb 22

I accidentally took inspiration from FatMumSlim's Photo a Day Challenge, day 23: shoes... a day early! I really need to do something about my shoe pile- as I commented on Instagram- I need a maid!

PK and I pretty much do the same thing as soon as we walk in the door at the end of the day or after we've been out and that is to take off our shoes as soon as possible. This is not to preserve our floors or anything posh like that- we just prefer to be barefoot!

365 Days a Year: Feb 21

It was quite a warm day yesterday, so instead of turning on the oven and heating the house any more, I decided to do as much as possible on the BBQ! I was a little nervous about this because the BBQ is usually PK's domain and I usually just do the prep...

It turned out pretty well: Portugese style chicken, with dukkah-crusted sweet potato, caramelised carrots and steamed snow peas. The vegies were actually the easiest as I just wrapped them in a foil package and let the trapped heat and steam cook them through. And because the vegies were all essentially steamed, they were super vibrant and flavourful! Yum!

365 Days a Year: Feb 20

I recently hung a painting in the kitchen area- we're slowly getting into the decorating phase of things! It's a watercolour still-life, done by my nanna who sadly passed away not long after I took PK to New Zealand to meet my extended family (and to have a holiday). My nanna was quite the amateur artist, so it makes me very happy to have something by her in my house!

I was struck by the way that PK's long stemmed rose from Valentine's fitted so well with nanna's still life. Love little moments of prettiness!

365 Days a Year: Feb 17, 18 &19

Feb 17
Oreo went a little mental on Friday night- he was zooming around the house like a mad thing and at one point scaled the front security door (which I had open to let in the breeze). He then realised that from there he could reach over onto the (newish) hat/coat rack and do some exploring... so he did. And then promptly fell off the hat rack as the sombrero was only just perched there!
Feb 18
PK and I went to an engagement party on Saturday night! It was loads of fun, even though I didn't really know many people (and PK knew fewer) apart from the groom to be. It was quite a well planned night- on arrival we were given these name tags so that everyone could meet new people and it really worked! Then when we got home and took them off, I just happened to have a magazine open to a page advertising bedding and so the name tags go to spend the night in bed together ;)
Feb 19
Another weekend, another set of bridal stores! I was too busy the last few weeks to organise any viewings over the last few weekends, but this week I was determined to make sure I had at least two. The dress won't just find itself after all! The shop on Saturday left me, my mum and a bridesmaid quite deflated as the dresses were all wrong and the attendant was obviously eager for a sale...

I wasn't expecting much from the Sunday booking either, especially after the first few dresses- but then, there it was! The dress PK will marry me in was found! I'd love to show copious pictures of this beauty (the dress I mean) but I do want it to be a surprise!! This table setting was in the foyer of the store where they had a couple of extravagant dresses on display as well as some lovely flower arrangements. I'm still on such a high from finding "the One" -I'm getting married!!!

365 Days a Year: Feb 16

Ugh! This is my least favourite job in the kitchen- chopping onions! If I can I usually ask PK to do it for me! I've tried a few techniques suggested for avoiding the dreaded onion cry- keeping the area well ventilated, keeping onions in the fridge beforehand, running your wrists under cold water... not much seems to help! Any tips peeps? Maybe I should try the match-stick trick from the movie "The Help"?

Its not like I really needed any help to have a bawl this week- the stress got a bit much for me earlier and I let it all out in the time-honoured female way- poor PK, he bore the brunt of it! I hate crying on my own accord though, I just feel drained afterward and not in any way better! Give me a tear-jerker movie (eg Atonement? The Notebook? Beaches?) and I'll sob for the characters and feel fine, but crying for myself just gets me no-where. Am I alone in this? Not sure, but maybe I should have chopped the onions earlier in the week and just passed it off as their fault!

365 Days a Year: Feb 15

PK wasn't due to be home last night for dinner, so it was just a meal for one for me! I decided that rather than go for a Macca's run I would try to be a little healthy. I won't lie to you though- you can just see in the top left corner the suggestion of a glass -which I promptly filled with wine. What? Wine is healthy, right? It's made from grapes... ;)

365 Days a Year: Feb 14

Normally, PK and I don't really celebrate Valentine's Day (we might go out for dinner but that's usually as far as we go)- a little bit because we are both so low key and a little bit because are both a little bit lazy ;)

So I was beyond surprised when I got a call from the front receptionist at work yesterday to tell me that I had a delivery- PK had sent me a package for Valentine's!! The box was looooooong so I was puzzled- what could it possibly be? Inside was the stuffed animal (bear? rabbit? dog?) and chocolates pictured above, as well as a single looooooong stemmed red rose. So beautiful! Bonus points for PK!

365 Days a Year: Feb 13

Oreo likes to watch while I bring the washing in... Well, really he was just watching me because I was outside and he was not! :)

For PK: Clouds!

It's Valentines Day! As a special treat just for my man, I thought I'd share a few pics that I've taken over the last few weeks (as well as some from previous posts) of some wonderful cloud formations. As a pilot and sailor, he's always looking up at the sky to figure out what kind of day it will be- and he loves clouds! So these are just for you honey! :)
How about you? Do you know someone who enjoys cloud gazing? Or perhaps you know all about cumulo- nimbus et al? Spill the beans!

365 Days a Year: Feb 10, 11 & 12

Feb 10
PK and I had another lovely afternoon at the beach after work on Friday. I just love the way that I always feel so rejuvenated after being at the mercy of the pull and push of the tides, the cool salty water and the rush of the breakers. It's soothing to my soul.
Feb 11
I had my usual PT session on Saturday and this is another intriguing view of the cityscape. I think it's fantastic that the older buildings are being saved and reinvented! The contrast of the old and the new is interesting and I think is contributing to making our city (slowly but surely) more vibrant.
Bonus pic!!
Feb 12
On Sunday PK and I went for another visit to the farmer's market (discovered a couple of weeks ago). But this time, we rode our bikes instead of driving the short distance! PK had a bacon and egg roll (all proceeds to the local Rotary Club) for brunch- I was tempted once again by the crepes but the wait was quite indomitable so I declined.

PK picked up a second-hand bike (bonus pic above) during the week (surprise!) and has decided to ride to work ever since, so it was a good excuse to dust mine off as well. I hadn't been for a ride in quite a while shamefully, but it was just like that old saying... ;)

It was a little bit romantic as well, going for a ride together- maybe we can make it a semi-regular thing?

365 Days a Year: Feb 9

It's been another frantic week for me this week, so when a couple of close friends mentioned that they had free tickets to an open air concert on the golf course who was I to pass them up?

After driving through the course (something normally reserved for golf buggies, not road cars!), PK and I found our friends' allotment on the rise of a hill. The weather stayed clear, warm and dry (despite the threatened rain), which made it perfect for our picnic dinner of dips, cheeses, meats, crudites and wine! The music wasn't anything too fancy but it was a lovely backdrop to our conversation. It was a perfectly relaxed evening!

365 Days a Year: Feb 8

Our little chilli plant has been going great guns! This is just some of the first harvest and it looks like it's going for round two already!

I'm thinking that we might make something like chilli oil, dried chilli flakes or chilli paste for gifts this year- look out friends and family, you're in for some heat!

365 Days a Year: Feb 7

It was a little warm when PK and I got home from work last night, so we headed to the beach. Beautiful afternoon!

Laundry Makeover- Part 2

When I last updated you on the laundry makeover, it looked like this:
- that is, quite empty! After removing the laundry tub and washing machine, there wasn't much left in the room apart from the built in cupboard. So we quickly set to work, building those flat packs into open shelving and cupboards ready for doors. Soon we had a few; the base cabinet for the new sink and a couple ready for hanging on the wall:
Next PK pulled out his power tools -plus a few borrowed from his dad- and set about cutting the benchtop down to size. Notice PK's lack of safety shoes? Yep, that came back to bite him a few minutes after this photo in the form of a painful toe... Not recommended folks!
After a few practice cuts to work out the best technique, PK was ready for the final cut...
with only one very slight adjustment!
Just look at how narrow that sliver is! I'd be so proud of my man if only he'd worn protective shoes as well! Well, I was pretty impressed anyway, really :) After some maneuvering, we had the benchtop in place and secured to the base cabinet and supports that PK had attached to the walls. He was very careful to make sure everything was level at every step!
Next on the agenda was to hang those upper cabinets- PK called in a taller assistant for this task! That's his brother in the background. He's a great resource to have living close by: tall and strong enough to help PK with tricky jobs like these AND he's a baker so we get lovely fresh bread every so often :D
So with some newly hung cabinets, that left us with a hole to cut for our new sink, the new sink and mixer to install (sneak peek here!), the doors to hang, the kickboards to attach... Oh yeah and a washing machine to purchase!

So what do you think? Is it looking better already? Are we sparking any ideas for your own laundry? I'd love to hear all about it!

365 Days a Year: Feb 6

Disaster!! We didn't pack the car very well after doing the shopping yesterday arvo... And the eggs were the only thing that fell out when we opened the boot to cart everything inside- doh!

Luckily only one of the eggs was cactus- and not the one that rolled out of the packaging either! Overall I was pretty impressed that the carton had cushioned the fall so well. It kind makes me think that the supermarket staff must be exceptionally rough with theirs to end up with so many broken ones all the time...

365 Days a Year: Feb 3, 4 & 5

Feb 3
I arrived home from work on Friday to find that our new washing machine had been delivered! Oh happy days- now I won't have to burden PK's brother or my mum with extra washing :)
Feb 4
Upon wakening on Saturday morning I found Oreo's cute little furry face peering back at me. He must have crept into our room some time during the night, but I was so dead tired that I didn't realise! While we are making over the laundry he has been somewhat displaced, so we've let him roam the house at night. I guess he thought our bed made a more comfy place to sleep than the couch?
Feb 5
PK worked hard all weekend and finally on Sunday afternoon we had finished the laundry makeover to the point that I was able to put a real load of washing through! This was actually a re-furb unit (so we got it for cheaper than retail), so we ran through a few maintenance/clean washes before proper use. I don't think our clothes have been this well treated in all their lives! We'll try to take better care of this machine than we did with the last one I think...

So that was my weekend- quite the homebody really! I needed a little bit of relaxation after the week I've had and I think PK did too. What did you get up to?

A Very Important Date

Bleugh! Last week was a doozie for me- flat out during the day and then working some more once I got home! That made for loooooooong days and meant I didn't even have time to pop in and hit that 'publish' button on draft posts! I felt a little like the white rabbit on some days...
I'm late! I'm late!
I hope you don't mind but I've been back in time and caught up on the week that was, so if you're interested, why not take a look?
If only I could just nap all day like Oreo!
In other news, I spent the majority of the weekend trawling the internet, looking at lots of pages with images like these:
'Camelia' by Collezione
Wedding Reception @ East Fremantle Yacht Club
Image from DJ Perth
Now of course, none of those listed are the actual options we're going with- I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise for all those folks that might actually be attending! But I guess you can gather from those few images that I have wedding planning on the brain! That is, when my head isn't full of things that I have to get done for my day job...

So how was your weekend? Were you planning a special event or catching up on some zzzzz's like me?

365 Days a Year: Feb 2

I nearly forgot to take a picture of this deliciousness! My manager was in town this week -he's based in Melbourne and it was the worst timing in terms of my availabilities but I'll take what I can get! Not only was the week a great opportunity to learn some essentials but he also marked ten years with the company, so a bit of celebration was in order!

My local supervisor took a few of us out to dinner at the Old Swan Brewery and it was well swish! I'd never been before and boy was I impressed! Amazing views, fantastic food, great service... and a price tag to match! Don't tell my PT but I savoured this chocolate and hazelnut slice like it was my last meal ;)

365 Days a Year: Feb 1

A good friend invited us out for dinner last night and it ended up being quite a late one! I took this on the drive home after our fantastic and filling meal. It was so nice to finally have some rain arrive after the humid days we've had recently- plus it made for some lovely effects on the car windshield!

365 Days a Year: Jan 31

PK's been working hard on getting the laundry makeover complete! Today the sink was officially "installed"- he had already secured it into place but we had left it curing for a perfect seal. He kept wanting to run back in and look at his handiwork, so I thought it was easier to just take a pic for him :)
